About us

Northumbria Primary Care (NPC) is a not-for-profit, at-scale provider of primary care services across Northumberland and North Tyneside. Established in 2015, we were founded with a clear ambition: to work collaboratively with like-minded practices to deliver high-quality, sustainable and holistic patient care, and to be recognised as an employer of choice within primary care.

We operate with a unique model of an entirely salaried workforce providing primary care services to around 134,000 patients from 25 GP surgery locations (14 GP practices). We employ more than 500 staff. We have our own independent board of directors, operating as a limited company, and also have the benefit of being a wholly owned subsidiary of the outstanding Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This provides the right mix of support and integration, whilst preserving our independence as a leading primary care organisation.

NPC launched its own primary care network in April 2022, maximising access to funding and enabling continuous improvement in patient care. Our patients are at the centre of everything we do. We are committed not only to providing excellent treatment but also to educating and empowering individuals to take an active role in their health. By understanding each patient’s background and circumstances, we deliver flexible, tailored care that meets their unique needs. Safety and quality underpin all our services, as demonstrated by our strong CQC rating.

NPC has experienced significant growth in recent years, reflecting both our ambition and the dedication of our exceptional people. This growth has strengthened our governance and leadership structures and enabled us to adopt a neighbourhood-based approach, allowing us to focus more closely on the health and wellbeing of local communities. In 2024, we delivered over 720,000 appointments across our practices.

As a forward-thinking organisation, NPC embraces innovation and technology to enhance patient care and experience. Our ‘digital front door’ initiative is a key priority, improving accessibility and supporting patients in self-care. Last year, we launched a new clinical strategy, which focuses on access, clinical sustainability, reducing health inequalities, integration, long-term condition management and prevention.

Safe and high quality care

Delivering the highest quality and safest care we can is at the heart of everything we do. To achieve this we all need to encourage and be open to participating in continuous improvement.
